Best Podcasts for Web Agency Owners, Spring 2017

These are the best podcasts for web agency owners that I've found. These are my favorites, listed in order of preference.

As a WordPress web agency owner, I'm interested in actionable information I can use to improve my business through strategy, sales, marketing, client services, project management, hiring, team management, etc.

If you like these, you should read my other posts about podcasts. I’m always looking for more, so please share your favorites in the comments!

Happy Client Show: Helping Agency Pros Deliver Delight

As with the other DoInbound podcasts, the hosts are happy to get into the nitty-gritty details, which is refreshing after so many podcasts that stay at a high level. "Stories from the trenches to help you delight your clients." "A resource to help agency professionals deliver delight to their clients. Stories from the trenches for inbound, content, marketing, PR, and online marketing agencies."

Agency Advantage

"Every Wednesday, Andy Baldacci interviews a new digital agency owner or consultant, but unlike other podcasts these interviews are focused on extracting actionable advice that you can immediately apply in your own business. Whether you run a design, marketing, development, or any other kind of digital agency, if you are looking to grow your business, this is the podcast you’ve been waiting for."

The Smart Agency Master Class

Host Jason Swenk knows his stuff. He ran a multimillion-dollar agency with over 100 employees. His advice is extremely practical.

"Have you ever asked yourself: How can I grow & scale my digital marketing agency? How can I generate more leads? How can I find time to do to work on the business and not in the business? What systems do I need in place or, how do I position to sell my agency… You’re in the RIGHT place! I have 12+ years running a successful digital agency that built websites for clients like Lotus Cars and Legal Zoom, until I sold my agency a couple years ago. The Smart Agency Master Class is for marketing, digital, web professionals, and creative agency business owners and entrepreneurs who want to discover how to take their business to the next level."

The Freelancers' Show

Despite the title, the hosts are high-end web and software consultants, not your typical freelancers. Their advice is valuable for web agency owners. "Weekly discussion by freelancers and professionals about running a business, finding clients, marketing, and lifestyle related to being a freelancer."

The Businessology Show

It's hosted by the owner of a CPA firm that serves agencies, so topics lean towards pricing and profitability. "A podcast about the business of design and the design of business."

Revenue Love - Sales Domination Podcast

I know host Jonathan Hinshaw from my being part of the uGurus community since the beginning of 2016. The episodes are few and far between since 2015; there were 2 in 2016 and have been 2 so far in 2017.

"Sales domination podcast for the new economy. Revenue Love is the brainchild of Jonathan Hinshaw, an industry expert and trusted mentor within the digital marketing and web agency community. Jonathan is an international business and sales expert who has crafted sales training programs for Fortune 500 companies, small businesses, entrepreneurs and success-minded individuals."

The Smart Business Show

The episodes are blissfully brief and focused episodes. A "5 - 10 minute podcast asking you hard questions about how you vet clients, price your services, market your business, and use your time."

The Creative Agency Podcast

"For entrepreneurs and people working in the creative industries. It's about finding success and work-life balance. While the focus is on web agencies, design agencies, and marketing agencies, the podcast offers lessons that can be applied to a wide range of business endeavors. Each episode tells the story of an agency owner or insider, how they found success, what mistakes were made, and what was learned along the way."

The Digital Agency Show

This is the podcast of uGurus, which offers courses and coaching to help web pros transform their businesses. I've been a member since the beginning of 2016. This podcast is new, having started in January 2017.

"Helping digital agency owners transform their business mindset so they can increase prices, work less, and grow profits. A weekly podcast where host Brent Weaver chats with today's most successful entrepreneurs running digital agency businesses in the web design, web development, and digital marketing industry. Build A Better Agency

"Scale and grow your agency with better clients, invested employees, and a stronger bottom line, with Drew McLellan." "Build A Better Agency, is completely focused on helping you do just that. No matter how strong, big or well-known your agency is today — I believe it can get even better. My guests are all agency-centric or have an expertise in an area that I believe agency owners need to know more about. Each podcast is 30-45 minutes long and always ends with some next steps that you can take immediately to implement something you’ve heard."

Matt Report - A WordPress podcast for digital business owners

The Matt Report is a series of interviews with people who run businesses around WordPress, usually providing client services or selling products (themes, plugins, maintenance, etc.). Matt and his guests often share valuable business insights.

"This is clarity for your digital business. Matt Report episodes help you better understand WordPress and it's ecosystem. Inbound Sales Journey

As with the other DoInbound podcasts, the hosts are happy to get into the nitty-gritty details, which is refreshing after so many podcasts that stay at a high level. "Strategies, tactics, and stories to accelerate your sales journey." "All-things agency sales. The goal is to give agency professionals a resource to help them sell more retainers and projects."

Working Without Pants - For Agency Owners & Consultants

Jake has spoken to the uGurus community. His podcast's cover art is definitely the most unusual in this set (it's Jake in his underwear). "The podcast for agency owners and consultants who are wanting to win more clients and better clients for their business. Each week, Jake Jorgovan brings you interviews with industry leaders and experts on how to win more clients for your agency or consulting practice. Past guests have included Brennan Dunn, Brent Weaver, Kai Davis, Philip Morgan, Brian Casel, Blair Enns, and many more."

Inbound Agency Journey

As with the other DoInbound podcasts, the hosts are happy to get into the nitty-gritty details, which is refreshing after so many podcasts that stay at a high level. The hosts "interview leading inbound marketing agency owners and key influencers from around the world to help you build your dream agency."

WPwatercooler

Most of the episodes are about the technical aspects of WordPress, but once in a while they get into the business side. The podcast is great for the roundtable discussions featuring a range of experience and opinions.

The Growth Lever Podcast: Practical Advice for Digital Agencies

I recently heard about this one on another podcast, and haven't been listening long. "Every week, we discuss actionable tactics and strategies that digital agencies, freelancers and consultants can use to grow their business. If you're a digital designer, developer, or marketer, then this is the show for you."

WP Innovator

I recently subscribed, and don't have much experience with this yet. "The WordPress Podcast For Design And Web Agencies."

Zero To Scale

I recently subscribed, and don't have much experience with this yet. "Two Entrepreneurs Take You Behind The Scenes In A Journey To $100k Per Month And Beyond." "Are YOU looking to increase the monthly revenue in your business? Learn from two entrepreneurs, Greg Hickman and Justin McGill, as they bring you behind the scenes each week to learn how they are building their bootstrapped businesses from zero to $20k per month and beyond in recurring revenue. Each week they share their updates including the wins, losses, lessons learned as they grow their businesses. Their businesses include productized services, SaaS products, agency services and even online training programs."

Other Podcasts for Web Agency Owners

Here are more podcasts for web agency owners, listed in no particular order. I don’t subscribe to these because they don’t have a high enough ratio of content that appeals to me. That’s not necessarily a fault of the podcasts; it’s just because of who I am (see beginning of this post).

The Boagworld UX Show: I listened for many years, and finally stopped because the episodes were too long and filled with too much fluff. "Boagworld is a podcast about digital strategy, management and user experience. It offers practical advice, news, tools, review and interviews with leading figures in the web design community. Covering everything from usability and design to marketing and strategy, this show has something for everything. This award winning podcast is the longest running web design podcast with over 380 episodes."

BizCraft talks about the emotional side of running a web agency more frequently than other podcasts. The hosts aren't afraid of talking about dealing with the stress and ethical issues of running a web agency. "This is BizCraft, the podcast about the business side of web design."

The Deeply Graphic DesignCast: The conversations often revolve around design, and are sometimes about the business side of running a design company. "If you are a graphic designer, web designer or a visual designer of any kind, this is the podcast for you. Each episode tackles a different graphic design related topic, from finding better clients to online portfolios to making sure you get paid."

Hustle is "a show about the ideas, methods, people, teams and cultures, and everything else necessary to design meaningful digital products in today's competitive landscape."
