Find news safely online

Some of the most popular Google searches are for news headlines and current events. When people hear about stock market rallies, earthquakes, or celebrity deaths, they rush to Google for information. Need proof? Just check out the hot searches at Google Trends.

The bad guys take advantage of this by hijacking search results - they make their sites appear near the top of the Google search results. When you click them, their sites infect your computer or do something else  malicious.

The best way to avoid hijacked links is to go straight to your favorite reputable news sites for headlines and current events. Go to CNN, The New York Times, or your local news site, then click or search from there.

Unfortunately, this isn't a cure-all, because even large news sites have unwittingly served infected ads. Still, you're much less likely to run into trouble on these sites than by blindly clicking Google search results.
